Why is it important to have a routine for allergic skin?

Establishing a routine for managing allergic skin conditions in dogs is crucial for several reasons. Allergic skin issues, such as atopic dermatitis or food allergies, can significantly impact a dog's quality of life, causing discomfort, itching, and potential complications. Here are some reasons why a routine is important:

Manages lifelong disease: Allergic skin conditions often persist throughout a dog's life. Even if the skin looks normal, it is not, requiring continuous care and attention. A well-established routine ensures consistent management to keep symptoms under control and maintain the dog's skin health. As soon as the signs get out of control, having a routine allow to react quickly and get medical attention.

Treats hidden discomfort: Even if their skin appears normal on the surface, they might be experiencing underlying itching or irritation that is not immediately visible. In any case, even if the skin looks normal, microscopical changes are present and will contribute to a relapse in the future. A routine helps in addressing these subtle discomforts that might go unnoticed.

Ensures well-being: Chronic skin conditions can cause intense itching, discomfort, and pain for dogs. A well-designed routine helps alleviate symptoms and keeps the dog more comfortable longer.

Reinforces the bond: Dealing with a lifelong disease requires a sustained and trusting relationship between the owner and the dog. Following a routine establishes predictability and consistency, reducing stress for the dog. Using products practical and pleasant to use allow to strengthen the bond between the pet and its family over the long term.

What to use for allergic skin?

It will depend on what’s causing the allergy and is likely to evolve over time, and is often a combination of solutions. If not managed appropriately, the symptoms can rapidly worsen and become much more difficult to control.

There are four approaches that we can take to manage dog allergies:

Avoid the allergens where possible (e.g. frequent cleaning to minimise dust mites, regular preventative flea control, avoiding certain foods or cleaning products)

Let’s focus on the topical approach as it is the heart of the routine. Topical products bring soothing ingredients where needed. When dealing with allergic skin, it's crucial to choose topical products that not only provide soothing relief but also repair the damaged skin.
